Lake Trasimeno
Only 10 minutes by road from the agriturismo farmhouse is Lake Trasimeno, with its three islands: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese.
Together they make the Lake Trasimeno Regional Park, formed in 1995.
Immersed in the green of the reeds and surrounded with olive tree covered hills the lake sets a wonderful background to our itinerary Man has played an integral part in the history of the Trasimeno landscape for thousands of years.
It is a large lake that sits looked down upon by castles high above and all around it. The towns of Castiglione del Lago, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Monte del Lago are located on top of headlands directly on the edge of the lake whilst other castles such as Panicale, Paciano, Tuoro and San Savino also exploit the surrounding hills.
All around the area surrounding Lake Trasimeno you can see and feel the medieval atmosphere. There are ancient villages, castles and cathedrals that look onto the lake from the grassy hills covered vines and olive trees.
The most important town on the lake is Castiglione del Lago which has preserved intact its city walls and where you can visit the Rocca del Leone (Fortress of the Lion) and the Palazzo of Corgna. On the opposite shore, back towards the farmhouse, there is the beach at Tuoro where you can find the Campo del Sole in which there are 28 sandstone sculptures made by contemporary sculptors.
From Tuoro you can take the ferry service to the lake’s beautiful green islands including Isola Maggiore. Here you can see ancient traditions that are still very much alive such as the art of lace making practiced by the island’s women. There is also a Lace Museum which preserves ancient examples of lace and old fabrics.
Heading towards the farmhouse you will find Passignano Sul Trasimeno, with its many lakeside and central restaurants. It also has several ceramics shops that sell arts and crafts typical to Umbria. It also hold an antiques market on the third weekend of every month.
